Mutual funds are a vehicle by which many investors pool their resources to invest in a wide range of stocks, bonds, and other financial securities.

Unlike direct ownership of stock (equity) in a company, mutual funds are managed by professionals, and usually require little or no active involvement by individual shareholders.

This makes investing in mutual funds a great alternative for those wanting to escape the day-to-day worry of investing directly in the stock market. Investors can rest assured that their money is in the hands of professionals, and is well-diversified among a number of different securities.

This type of "passive" investing does come with a cost, however, and many mutual funds come with fairly high management fees, which can eat in to profits over time.
