Equity-based mutual funds allocate investors' funds primarily or exclusively towards equity investments – normally common stock in publicly traded corporations.

These funds can range from very general to very specialized, with some of them covering all types of equities, and others investing exclusively in a particular industry. Industry-specific funds are generally somewhat more risk-intensive than very general market-wide funds, although it is important to remembers that nearly all equities will carry some degree of risk.

For Canadian investors whose portfolios consist primarily of stocks and other equities, it is often a good idea to put a percentage of your capital in the United States, Europe, or another foreign market. This type of international diversification should shelter you from a sudden downturn in the domestic economy.
