Buying real estate is a type equity investing that involves a tangible piece of property, which can generally expect to appreciate in value over time.

Owning property is one of the safest investments, as land has always gone up in value over the long-term. Real estate investments also have the potential to generate rental revenue, giving them strong appeal for the shorter-term income-oriented investor.

Getting into the real estate market, especially in a desirable location, can be difficult for smaller investors, especially now as mortgage rates climb throughout North America. The best way to get into the property market is nearly always to start small and trade up gradually as new opportunities become available.

Those investors who aren't financially capable of purchasing their own real estate portfolio may be interested in Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and other property-oriented mutual funds.
