Much like mutual funds, Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) involve a number of investors pooling their resources into a managed investment organization.

Structured as joint-stock corporations or business trusts, REITs invest primarily in residential and commercial properties, as well as first and second mortgages. They are designed to profit from both increasing real estate values, as well as revenue from rent and interest payments.

REIT shares are listed on stock exchanges around the world, and may be publicly traded in the same way as stocks and mutual funds.
